Networking Router | What is Router – Types Of Router & Classifications

Networking Router is a Networking device. As you all have heard about the router and seen the router, but you might not know what the router actually is and how it works. Today I will tell you what a router is and how it works and I will also tell you about the types of routers.

What is Networking Router ?

Basically Networking Router is a device which make Communication possible between two or more different Networks Present in the same Geographical locations and different Geographical locations.

In the easy words Networking Router is a Specialized Computer Connected to more than one Network.

And Router is a Internet Working device.

How Networking Router Works

Router operate at the network layer or layer 3 of the OSI model. Routers having a Software that allow the router to move data from one network to another network.

A router forwards data packets between computer networks. router perform the traffic directing functions on the internet data sent through the internet.

Router Classifications

  1. Fixed Router :- Fixed Routers is a non up-gradable, we cannot add and remove the Ethernet or Serial interfaces.
  • This types Routers doesn’t have any slot.
  • Fixed Router are just like a branded PC where modification of interfaces is not possible.
  1. Modular Router :- Modular routers is a up-gradable Routers and we can add or remove interfaces as per our Requirement .
  • Slots are available in the Modular Router.
  • Modular Router are just  like a assembled PC where modification of interfaces is possible.

Which Networking Router  Should We Buy

Many Companies are manufacturing Routers like:

  • Cisco
  • Nortel
  • Multi-com
  • Cyclades
  • Juniper
  • D link
  • Link sys
  • 3Com

But only Cisco Is having Monopoly in the market of Routers.

Types Of Network Routers

A router is a networking device, responsible for maintaining the flow of data between networks. There are different types of routers available in computer networking technologies.

  • Wired Routers/Wireless Routers
  • Edge Routers
  • Core Routers
  • Virtual Routers

Wired Routers/Wireless Routers

These types of routers are mostly used in homes and small offices. Wired routers share data over cables and create wired local area networks, And wireless routers use antennas to share data and create wireless local area networks.

Edge Routers

These types of routers are wired or wireless that distributes data packets between one or more networks but not within a network.

Edge routers are placed at the edge or boundary of networks, and typically connect to Internet service providers (ISPs) or other organizations’ networks.

These Routers keep your network easily and smoothly communicating with other networks.

Core Routers

These types of routers are wired or wireless and distribute data packets within networks, but not between multiple networks.

They are designed to become the backbone of your network and do the heavy lifting of data transfer, which is why they are usually high-performing.

Virtual Routers

Virtual routers are software routers that allow computers and servers to operate like routers.

They will share data packets just like a physical routers.

They can offer more flexibility than physical devices since they can be scaled as the business grows, they can also help get remote offices up and running on your network more quickly.
