Network Switch | What is Network Switch – Types of Network Switches

Network Switch is a Networking device. As you all have heard about the Switch and seen the Switch, but you might not know what the Switch actually is and how it works. Today I will tell you what a Switch is and how it works and I will also tell you about the types of Switch.

What is Network Switch

A network switch is a computer networking device that connect network segments or network devices.

A switch is a multi-port network bridge because the switch has many ports so it is called multi-port. And the switch works exactly like a network bridge, so the switch is also called multi-port bridge.

A Network Switch work at Data Link layer (layer 2) of the OSI model.

Nowadays many switches work at the layer 3 (transport layer) of the OSI model, such a switch is called layer 3 switch or multi layer switch.

Multi-layer switches perform switching as well as routing.

But if we talk about only switch then the switch is a device. This works above layer 2 (data link layer) of the OSI model.

A switch is a telecommunication device which receives a message from any device connected to it and then transmits the message only to the device for which the message was meant. This makes the switch a more intelligent device than a hub.

Types of Network Switch

Unmanageable Switches

Unmanageable Network switches just like a box. It’s not designed to be configured; we cannot configure this according to our requirement.

IP address cannot be assigned to unmanageable switches because there is no console port.

So you don’t have to worry about installing or setting it up correctly.

Unmanageable switches have fewer features and less network capacity compare than manageable switches. You will usually find Unmanageable switches in home networking equipment and also small offices.

Manageable Switches

Manageable Network switches is configurable,we can configure this according to our requirement.

These Types of Switches offering greater security, flexibility, and capacity compare than an unmanageable switches.

You can monitor and adjust at these switches locally or remotely, to give you greater network control.

IP address can be assigned to manageable switches because it has a console port.
